Vacationing along Italy’s Amalfi Coast

Keyvan Azami has held the position of director of rates eTrading technology with Barclays Capital in New York City since 2013. Outside the office, Keyvan Azami looks forward to vacationing along Italy’s Amalfi Coast, one of his favorite Italian destinations.

Located in the southern part of the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Italian province of Salerno, the Amalfi Coast is characterized by communities of bright pastel-colored houses seemingly built into the hillsides that rise dramatically from the sea. Immensely popular with tourists, it is located about three-and-a-half hours southeast of Rome.

Tourist attractions along the Amalfi Coast include numerous churches, cathedrals, and castles. One of the oldest structures is the Amalfi Cathedral, located in the center of the town of Amalfi, which dates to the 9th century. In addition, there are several beautiful beaches in the region, including the Spiaggia Grande, Atrani beach, and Duoglio beach.

There are scores of good restaurants on the Amalfi Coast, many of which also offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean. The day’s main meal is lunch, generally served from noon until around 3 p.m., and dinner is not usually eaten until after 7:30 p.m. Everywhere on the Amalfi Coast, diners can enjoy a nice meal of the local pasta with freshly-caught seafood, followed by limoncella, the local lemon-based liqueur. The various towns and villages that line the Amalfi Coast also feature their own specialties, such as the buffalo-milk mozzarella of Caserta, Minori’s pasta, or the famous anchovies of Cetara. The best pizza in Italy, they say, is found in Naples, an hour and a half to the north, and there is nothing to compare with the torta caprese, a rich almond and chocolate cake served on the Isle of Capri.
